Postal Rate Hike Formula Faces House Scrutiny
Chairman Murray of the House Post Office Committee opposed the department’s plan for a 300 percent rate increase on second class mail while not opposing the general idea of higher charges. The proposal would replace the 1 1/2 cent per pound base with a tiered system from two to nine cents per pound plus advertising surcharges based on content, potentially widening a half billion dollar deficit.
