Senator Ralph Flander of Vermont accuses Senator Joseph McCarthy in a Senate speech of doing his best to shatter the Republican Party. He says McCarthy's red hunting diverts attention from dangerous problems abroad.
At the Inter-American Conference in Caracas the United States pursued an anti Communist resolution led by John Foster Dulles. Eight of nineteen nations signaled backing with several others expected to join as Guatemala opposed, adoption anticipated by Saturday.
Vice President Nixon told a Philadelphia Bulletin Forum audience that the United States has shifted to fighting on its own terms. He cited reorganized armed strength and planning bearing visible fruit with areas where Reds have not gained ground. He credited Eisenhower, Dulles, and the defense team for the shift toward peace and prosperity.
London bulletin reports a predicted retirement for Sir Winston Churchill. The Daily Sketch, a strong supporter of Churchill's Conservative party, claims he will resign in the autumn of this year as he nears his 80th birthday on November 30.
GM reports 1953 sales of 10.03 billion dollars, taxes totaling 1.898 billion, and net income of 598.1 million. The company produced 3.76 million vehicles, with 3.28 million U.S. and Canada and 0.484 million abroad, claiming the world’s largest corporate earnings.

Paris AP reports the French National Assembly approved Premier Laniel authority to pursue peace in Indochina, backing him and Foreign Minister Bidault for Geneva talks with the Big Four and Red China. Laniel urged a cease-fire before Geneva, aligning with Nehru’s proposal.
Ohio authorities hunted two young robbers who held up the Erie County United Bank in Milan stealing about 29,672 to 32,000 dollars. The thieves fled in a green 1948 or 1949 Chevrolet with license Q32R, abandoning the town after a midday heist that left two women tellers unthreatened. FBI roadblocks expanded the manhunt across a 100 mile radius as investigators described the suspects as two men around 24, one tall and blond, the other swarthy. The Milan bank had last seen a robbery in 1893, then called Farmers and Citizens Bank.
President Eisenhower nominated Robert B. Anderson to become deputy secretary of defense succeeding Roger Kyes who announced resignation effective May 1. Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson and Kyes were pictured in Washington as the nomination was announced.
The White House moved to fill the Navy secretary post after Robert B. Anderson was nominated to be deputy defense secretary. Governor John Lodge was discussed as a possible successor. Anderson, a Democrat for Eisenhower from Texas, has one year in Pentagon operations and is expected to help in the role as Roger M. Kyes leaves May 1.
The Ohio Turnpike Commission awarded the rental and maintenance of automatic toll-collection equipment to IBM for 35 570 dollars monthly, 426 840 yearly, to be installed by Sept. 15 1955 ahead of the turnpike opening. The system aims to cut fraud and errors by weighing and recording truck weights.
