A gunman freed his hostage outside City Hall after 45 hours and a White House pledge to speak with him. Police said no one was harmed as Cory Moore released Leo Keglovic and Shelley Ann S with Moore to be sent to custody.

Spinning Therapy Aims to Build Child Coordination

In Columbus Ohio researchers at Ohio State University spun babies in a purpose built chair at about 16 rpm for two minutes to stimulate the vestibular system. Normal infants showed improved motor coordination after four weeks with several examples including head control and unaided sitting. The method also showed promise for older children with cerebral palsy and is already used in therapy.

Carter Rejects Chile Apology While Lifts Travel Ban

President Carter condemned the U S diplomat Brady Tyson's Chile remark as inappropriate and announced the end of the travel ban to four Communist nations. He said the United States has erred on human rights in some cases but did not classify Allende's 1973 overthrow as such.

Weather Outlook With Mild Tonight and Showers Likely Thursday

Tonight will be partly cloudy and mild with a low in the mid 40s. Thursday forecast is cloudy with a chance of afternoon showers or thundershowers. Precipitation chances are 10 percent tonight and 30 percent Thursday. Yesterday's high reached 65 and the overnight low was 43.

Intentional quarry blast blinds occupy towns near Carey

A deliberate dynamite explosion at National Lime and Stone Co. near Carey left about a dozen families homeless in Wyandot County. The blast at 3 46 a m cracked windows across the region, created a 100 by 80 by 50 foot crater, and drew 25 deputies to secure the site. No injuries were reported. 40 000 to 50 000 pounds of dynamite were involved. 150 Local 15050-1 United Steelworkers on strike since February 19 form part of the context for the disruption.

West drought worsens as March brings little rain

An AP survey shows sporadic coastal rain failing to ease one of the driest years in the West.
