Expense Of Producing Steel To Increase About Dollar Due To Coal Pact
New York AP The Iron Age says the new coal miners contract will raise finished steel production costs by somewhat less than $1 a ton. Despite this the steel industry may see lower coal costs per ton this year than 1949 as last year’s coal tax from a weeklong production drive is cited. Output is about 73 percent of capacity, with expectations to climb back into the nineties in two weeks. The coal strike caused about a million tons of lost steel production, enough to supply roughly 150,000 standard houses with autos and appliances. No. 1 heavy melting steel in Pittsburgh regained $1 a ton, lifting the Iron Age steel scrap composite to $27.42 per gross ton.

Coal strikes ease as railroads recall workers
Railroads moved coal cars as 600 empties were ordered today while normal traffic runs at 400 to 500 cars daily. Chesapeake and Ohio furloughed 5,79 workers and hopes most will return by week’s end. Virginian Railway recalled 200 workers to Princeton shops. West Virginia coal output nears pre strike levels though one major operation idled over a misunderstanding. Island Creek Coal miners misread an injunction as permanent. Eastern Pennsylvania hard coal miners work three days weekly during the strike. 372,000 soft coal diggers still idle. In Pottsville, violence erupts at a hard coal operation as roving pickets burn three mine apples over royalty disputes. 1,500 freelance miners join, one man beaten, no arrests.
