Health insurer Blue Cross of Southwest Ohio defends costs

Blue Cross of Southwest Ohio Chief Kammer and executive Dennis McClung refute claims of high admin expenses and hospital price gouging. They cite low operating costs, strong member benefits, and long standing preapproved hospital budgeting and negotiations with local providers to slow cost increases.

Health care costs and patient responsibility discussed

Ohio Blue Cross official McClung explains limits on benefits and recent legislation allowing broader coverage. He cites pre-admission testing and a nursing home care exchange as cost saving but underused, and stresses cooperative efforts among hospitals, physicians, insurers, and government to improve care while patients share responsibility.

Blue Cross Negotiated Charges Control Hospital Fees

Blue Cross does not give hospitals a blank check. It sets negotiated charges after hospitals submit 90 days of documented need for increases. Blue Cross reviews the rationale, discusses with hospital admins, and the underwriting committee plus Board of Trustees approve or reject. Approved charges are audited and paid.

Blue Cross expands outpatient radiation therapy program

Blue Cross stays the course with its outpatient radiation therapy initiative in a 15 county area. The pilot, begun last summer on hospital admin and physician advice, aims to cut inpatient stays and improve facility use.
