The Bank of England reduced the bank rate to 7 percent, a half-point drop from 8 percent. It is the first cut in about a year and follows the sustained easing in Britain's credit costs, seen as a sign of improving the economy.
The Middletown forecast calls for clear and colder tonight with lows in the mid to upper 20s. Friday brings sunny skies and little temperature change with highs in the mid 40s to lower 50s. Saturday expected to be cloudy and slightly warmer with a chance of showers. Yesterday’s high was 57 and this morning’s low 37 with 1.06 inches of rain recorded overnight.
The Pentagon intends to shut down or cut strength at 371 military installations in the United States and overseas to save more than $914 million. Secretary Melvin R. Laird announced the plan Wednesday, saying reductions were forced by budgetary constraints.
Cutbacks announced by the Pentagon will eliminate 398 civilian jobs at Wright Patterson AFB in fiscal 1971. Overall, 93 900 jobs are affected with 58 600 held by civilians. Laird and Brown note congressional concern as lists of district impacts are prepared for release. Overseas cuts to be disclosed after consultations with foreign governments.
The U S Command reported 113 Americans killed in battle in Vietnam last week, the highest toll in three months and above the prior week’s 109. Enemy losses dropped about 20 percent to 2,009, while Saigon reported 233 government casualties and 1,000 wounded.
In Darlington County South Carolina police arrested 15 white men after a desegregation protest at Lamar High and Elementary School. State charges followed for more than 30 participants. All entrances to the Lamar grounds were sealed as troopers patrolled and the school remained closed.
Rep. Wilbur D. Mills, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, is expected to sponsor the welfare reform bill. He will push it toward passage and handle floor action, saying it can be financed within the $4.4 billion budget figure. The bill mirrors Nixon proposals and is nearing final drafting in committee.
Defense Ministry officials search for a collision cause after the 850-ton French submarine Eurydice, with 57 on board, disappeared near Cape Camarat off Toulon following a practice dive. A violent sea explosion and debris were reported, and the search considers possible hull damage from a surface vessel. The Eurydice’s sister ship Minerve vanished in 1968, with 52 aboard.
Union chiefs claim no satisfaction as Congress adopts a 37 day postponement of a nationwide rail strike. President Nixon and White House press secretary call the bill a stopgap while workers fear further wildcat action and bargaining resumes with John P. Hiltz.
The treaty to curb nuclear weapon spread takes effect with ceremonies in Washington London and Moscow. Presidents Nixon and Kosygin lead formal events as 40 nations have ratified. The accord bans transfer of atomic weapons to nonnuclear states and pledges nonnuclear nations not to seek them.
President Johnson entered Brooke General Hospital with chest pains from arterial hardening. Doctors said he has a cold and mild illness. Luci Nugent said he is determined to follow doctors' rules and is in good spirit as he distributes flowers to patients.
