Mining Leader Endorses St. Lawrence As Vital Seaway Advocate
George M. Humphrey president of the M. A. Hanna Company testified before the House Public Works Committee that early completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway is a vital necessity to supply iron ore for defense. He cited Labrador deposits with reserves exceeding 400 million tons and outlined plans to ship 5 million tons in 1955 and 10 million tons by 1956 or 1957, following a 365 mile railroad buildout. The CIO endorsed seaway construction as soon as possible, citing lower transport costs and more jobs, while hearings resume March 12 with opponents testifying.
