In Gary Indiana AP report, an exploding oil heat in a Hobart home killed three girls aged 3, 2, and 10 months. Their mother, Mrs James Robert Stamey 27, escaped but could not save them as flames spread. She was treated for shock at a Gary hospital. The husband worked elsewhere in Gary steel mill when the blaze started.
The Interstate Commerce Commission suspended a third proposed cut in railroads coal consuming services planned to start at midnight Sunday. ICC Chairman J Monroe Johnson said previous cuts in air and freight service are being relaxed to permit prompt movement of trans carrying cars to harbor coal.
Detroit AP report says United Auto Workers will demand a $125 monthly pension and a nine cent per hour wage raise as part of a $31 per hour package for 235,000 General Motors workers. The push includes hospitalization and fringe benefits with UAW opposing escalator wage tied to living costs. Bargaining could start April 1 with a contract set to expire May 29.
In Cedarville Ohio four members of the Davis family died last night when their car was dragged more than half a mile by a diesel powered Pennsylvania Railroad freight train. Victims were Harry Davis 50 Ruth Mae Davis 12 Billy Davis 6 and Edward Wayne Davis 3. The crash occurred downtown as the locomotive sustained only minor damage and continued toward Columbus Richmond. witnesses said the train was on a down grade toward Xenia eight miles away.
Soviet scientist Dr. Gregori Shain, director of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, wins the Stalin prize for discovering heavy hydrogen in certain star atmospheres. The award totals 200,000 rubles, part of 20,100,000 rubles awarded to 277 winners for science and invention.
