Cleveland Clinic warns hikers that heavy backpacks or straps kept in one position can cause backpack palsy. The condition, first noted in WWII soldiers and seen in Boy Scouts, brings pain or numbness in the arm with possible muscle weakness. Treatment includes rest and physical therapy for months.
Hamilton appoints 66 year old Chief Deputy Charles L. Sroufe as interim sheriff for a 12 day period. The appointment was reported by Shawnee Culbertson of the Journal Staff.
A Point Pleasant man fired a shotgun into 30 sticks of dynamite at the Mason County Courthouse and jail killing four, including Bruce Sisk his wife Harriett and two officers Sheriff Pete Wedge and Deputy Kenneth Love. Twelve others injured with one deputy in critical condition.
Sisk appoints Sroufe interim sheriff of Butler County after Harold J Carpenter resigns amid charges of federal income tax evasion. Carpenter pleaded guilty to two counts. faces up to 10 years and fines. Appointment window set for March 8, 10, 12 with final selection March 15 ahead of June 8 primary. Carpenter released on bond and may travel briefly for business.
Lockheed Aircraft Corp. chairman Robert W. Haack testified before the Senate Banking Committee that federal funds were not used to cover bribes to foreign officials. He said the firm has taken steps to prevent improper payments and noted that Lockheed was not alone in paying commissions on overseas business.
Mozambique's Marxist government declared a state of war with Rhodesia and sealed its 800 mile border amid calls to seize Rhodesian assets and apply full sanctions. President Samora Machel urged aid for civilians as Rhodesian forces pursue guerrillas along the frontier. London markets reacted with De Beers and Charter Consolidated shares tumbling on war fears.
A clash between agencies over using Social Security numbers to locate absent fathers threatens the Federal Parent Locator Service aimed at cutting welfare costs by up to a billion dollars annually. HEW officials warn access is essential to collect support from about 2.8 million of 3.4 million AFDC families with nonpaying absent parents. Senate Finance Chairman Russell Long hints he may delay Taft IV confirmation until privacy conflict is resolved.
