First Time Bargaining Wrapped Up By Mailmen
The Middletown Post Office and Local 188 of the National Association of Letter Carriers reached a month long local bargaining agreement last week. Postman George Velte said both sides learned and kept their cool during talks. Key issues included vacation scheduling and rotating days off, with Mondays favored for vacations and a rotating day-off system sought. Disputes over weather related delivery curtailments were noted. A final session extended past 10 p.m. produced a memorandum of understanding and a 12 page item list to regional offices for regional follow up. The national contract governs local actions and ensures no conflict with the national terms. Velte noted many items are to be worked out regionally.
