Red Threat In Guatemala Makes Washington Uneasy
Washington officials show growing concern over a communist threat in Guatemala where a small number of Communists and allies hold key posts in the General Confederation of Labor the state radio the Electoral Board and the Social Security Institute with the presidency of the one house Congress held by Roberto Alvarado Fuentes. Fuentes is next in line to succeed President Arbenz who may be weakened by health issues or move against the communists while some say he remains in control. U S officials warn the situation could give the Reds a base for operations in Central America and prompt charges of a Soviet beachhead on our flank. House and Republican leaders accuse the government dominated unions and United Fruit Company of labor pressure while the U S seeks non intervention.
