Ruble Diplomacy Seen In New Russian Move
Washington officials described Russia’s currency changes as a possible start to ruble diplomacy aimed at using the ruble as a propaganda tool beyond the Communist bloc. Moscow cut prices on key foods and shifted the ruble from a dollar standard to gold, increasing its value from about 19 to 25 cents, while the dollar’s rate for foreigners will be altered after July 1, potentially doubling living costs for those using the old diplomatic rate.
