Seven battalions of South Vietnamese troops pressed a new drive around Ben Het after a 20 day sweep in which authorities claim 254 North Vietnamese were killed. The operation began June 8 and extended to the weekend with 21 South Vietnamese killed and 107 wounded.
Washington AP reports the House faces a pivotal test as Republicans push Nixon's surtax extension to 10 percent through December and 5 percent through June 1970. Democrats split, with many opposing long extensions without tax reform. Senate Democrats demand changes.
Moise Tshombe, famed as the rubber man of African politics and former Congo premier, died in Algiers at 49 from an apparent heart attack. An Algerian doctors’ communique said he appeared to have died in his sleep and an autopsy would be held. He had lived in exile since 1963 and once led Katanga secession.
Nervous passengers cheered when a chartered Canadian DC8 with 260 aboard landed at Shannon airport Sunday night after the starboard engine burst and the engine cover tore off. Captain Neil Carey steered the jet to safety at 35 000 feet, two RAF planes escorted it, and passengers including Daniel Boyd 74, a Canadian, debarked unharmed for a Shannon overnight stay.
The toecast warns of hot humid conditions today with highs in the 90s and 100s. Tonight's lows in the 60s and 70s. Tuesday expected cloudy and cooler with highs in the 60s and evening temps in the 60s to 70s. Yesterday peaked at 94 degrees and this morning opened at 72.

A Western Pacific freight train passing Tobar near Wells Nevada triggered a boxcar explosion injuring four people. Onlookers described sudden flashes and blasts as bombs aboard the car blew apart while the train moved through the rail siding. One injured man Morris Tipton, a 48 year old transient from Ponca City Oklahoma, recalled the event.
Police linked two car bombings in Seattle and a large blast at the University of Washington. A custodian and security officer were in the UW building during the explosion, which caused major structural damage and flooded a basement computer room.
Los Angeles AP report notesLt Lytton founder of a $500 million savings and loan empire died at 56 from an apparent heart attack. Once boastful about profits his firms faced creditor worries and a corporate crisis led to his ouster 14 months earlier. A friend said losing the name on the building deeply hurt him.
TEL AVIV AP The Israeli army said its commandos conducted their deepest raid into Egypt since 1967 rupturing the Cairo to Aswan power line near Suhaj and damaging a second line at El-Walid Salameh. Egypt denied knowledge of the raid and no ground resistance was reported. Police questioned Arab suspects after Tel Aviv's worst bomb blast this year injured ten.
A nephew of Charles de Gaulle claims the former president is dominated by his wife Yvonne. Alaine de Gaulle quotes Mrs de Gaulle saying she runs the house while he runs France, handles the finances, and even bars him from the account books.
