Two Old Rivals Team Up To Lead Congo After Independence
In Brussels AP report Belgian Congo gains independence today with Patrice Lumumba becoming premier and Joseph Kasavubu president. Lumumba, 34, leader of the National Congolese Movement, heads a coalition with 84 of 137 seats. Kasavubu, 42, of Abako, becomes president after being blocked from premiership. Lumumba’s early career included jail time for embezzlement and a prior clerkship at Stanleyville. Kasavubu, born 1917 near Mayumbe, founded Abako and opposed Belgian rule, later pushing for a constitutional assembly for an independent Congo.
