Police describe four gunmen posing as delivery men entering Sherman Steinberg's Avenue Foch apartment at 10 a.m. They bound the maid and a companion, seizing a 38 carat diamond valued at $1 million and a $500,000 turquoise and diamond necklace among other items. Most jewels insured.
In Zaire two abducted women, Carrie Hunter 21 of California and Emilie Bergmann 25 of the Netherlands, were released after nearly six weeks and reached Kigoma Tanzania in good shape. They will fly to Dar es Salaam, while Kenneth Smith 22 of California remains hostage. U S diplomats said efforts continue for his release. Stanford President Richard Lyman voiced relief at the update.

Arch Deal, 43, WFLA TV anchor from Tampa, fell 3000 feet during a Cypress Gardens show. His main chute failed to open fully and the reserve also tangled. he landed in an orange grove, fractured pelvis neck spine and ribs but survived without internal injuries. He plans to jump again soon and is expected to be released in about two weeks.
