Nineteen American and 19 Thai soldiers die in five Vietnam War helicopter crashes around Saigon amid a drive to blunt Viet Cong attacks. A crash 16 miles east-southeast of Saigon causes a 12 hour battle. 46 Viet Cong bodies and 19 weapons found.
An airliner with 22 aboard made a safe landing after colliding with a 2000 foot TV tower near Joe Foss Airport. The tower collapsed, two stations went off air, and the Convair 580 landed with no injuries among 13 aboard. Passengers described sparks from the engine as the plane shed left side visibility.
President Johnson urges federal registration of all privately owned guns and licensing under federal standards with a 10 year deadline for states to comply. Critics like Rep. Sikes argue there is a law enforcement shortfall while Sen. Tydings supports the move as a response to gun traffic. The plan would use a single computer center to track registrations and bar possession by criminals, addicts, and others deemed a public risk.
Ohio National Guardsmen helped guard the 122 year old penitentiary as inmates rioted after prison fires damaged seven units including the hospital. Guards confiscated weapons while Columbus police and highway patrol battled convicts for five hours.
National Guardsmen with riot control weapons patrolled curfewed streets of Washington after disorders sparked by the closing of Resurrection City. Mayor Walter Washington declared an emergency and mobilized 1,450 Guardsmen as police cleared the 15 acre Poor People’s Campaign site and conducted hundreds of arrests.

Camillo Calogero, a Lynbrook pizza maker famed for tossing dough 10 feet high, won a $335,000 judgment after a crash left him unable to continue his craft. The accident in Mineola last Sept. 30 caused a broken neck and other injuries after a tow truck ran a stop sign. He sued for $500,000 and the state Supreme Court jury awarded the sum.
