Federal Reserve Eases Tight Money to Aid Treasury Loans
The Federal Reserve Board reduced reserve requirements to boost bank lending by about 5.78 billion dollars. The move aims to ease Treasury borrowing, with estimates of 5 to 6 billion dollars needed in the next three months. Secretary Humphrey says this does not mark a retreat from hard money policy and notes heavy upcoming Treasury financing. The changes affect reserve percentages for country, city, and district banks effective July 1, July 9, and alter the lending capacity of member banks holding about 85 percent of commercial deposits.
