Diplomat visits Angola to ease central African tensions
Senior U S diplomat Donald McHenry travels to Luanda for two days of talks with Marxist leaders to press for an orderly Namibian transition and to address Cuban troop presence in Angola. Officials say the mission signals expanded U S diplomacy toward Angola while stressing Cuba and Soviet influence remains a concern. The talks may cover noninterference pledges between Angola and Zaire amid regional flare ups and border issues.
