Harvard scientist Michael McElroy warns that rising nitrogen fertilizer use could cause greater ozone damage than fluorocarbon aerosols. He estimates nitric oxide from fertilizers could reduce the ozone layer by up to 30 percent by 2000, prompting calls for more research and careful action.
