Communists gain but CD wins in Italy elections
In Italy the Communist Party surged to 34.4 percent of the Chamber vote while the Christian Democrats held 38.7 percent, preventing a CD majority. Final counts show CD 263 seats to Communists 227 in the Chamber, Senate CD 135 seats and 38.9 percent, Communists 116 seats and 33.8 percent. Socialists and others faltered amid postwar coalition instability.

Senate Ratifies Spain Treaty to Spur Democracy
