DiSalle Rejects Clemency in Cleveland Slaying Case
Gov. Michael V. DiSalle, a foe of capital punishment, refused to stay the execution of Walter J. Byomin, 43, of Cleveland, slated for Wednesday night at Ohio Penitentiary for the Deputy Edmund G. Smith killing after a May 4, 1957 chase over Byomin's alleged advance on a woman. DiSalle noted he cannot substitute his judgment for the courts and upheld his constitutional duty despite personal opposition to capital punishment.

Fishermen Dead in Escuminac Storm Tragedy
At least 12 fishermen were dead and 22 listed as missing after a week end storm battered the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Search planes spotted 22 derelict boats along the Northumberland Strait between Point Escuminac and Richibucto with no signs of life. Two survivors, Hilaire Gauvin and Germain Chais son, were kept alive by an air pocket in their overturned boat. Gauvin’s uncle, Capt. Charles Gauvin, was washed overboard. The storm disrupted the salmon fleet as warnings were issued too late, causing heavy losses to boats, nets, and lobster pots.
