The Senate backed a 2.95 billion federal day care plan with a 73 12 vote, aiming to fund free care for low income working families and add preschool and parental support services. If House action stalls the measure, a presidential veto could again be sought, despite broad coalition support.
Elizabeth Holtzman defeats Emanuel Celler in Brooklyn district with 15 557 to 14 995 votes ending the long tenure of the House Judiciary Committee chair. Other incumbents Rooney and Ryan win close races while Abzug loses to Ryan amid reapportionment and political tension.
New York AP Emanuel Celler, 84, lost a Democratic primary to a young woman lawyer after a 50 year House tenure. He entered Congress in 1923 and becomes the longest-serving member if one more term completes. Celler chaired the Judiciary Committee and helped draft Civil Rights Acts of 1957 1960 and 1964.
Washington AP reports the Price Commission begins applying today to curb sharp food price rises with options that could limit meat pricing within two to three weeks. Officials say no decisive move to broad controls yet, weighing actions to keep markets functional while avoiding supply disruption.
In New Orleans at the U S Conference of Mayors Senator George McGovern and Chicago Mayor Richard J Daley gave conflicting accounts of their private talk. McGovern said Daley wanted him to know he was not part of any stop McGovern movement while Daley denied any such conversation. Daley praised McGovern's campaign but McGovern still lacks the 92 uncommitted Illinois delegates and said Daley would go to Miami Beach with uncommitted delegates to decide on first ballot support.
Sen George McGovern captured a large share of New York 278 delegates winning about 220 early and leading for six more with 25 of the 30 state party delegates likely to back him. Most GOP delegates backed Nixon while Humphrey and Muskie staked claims for uncommitted support in a primary where McGovern assumed a strong path to the nomination. Shirley Chisholm won four of six delegates in her district.
The Selective Service announces 8900 men to be drafted in August from lottery No. 75. Acting director Pepitone says the draft will stay below 100 this year, likely around 75, with July ceiling at 50. Inductees will receive notices starting July 3 as preinduction exams are scheduled through No. 100.
The Middletown area records a 62 degree overnight low with cloudy skies and a chance of showers. Tonight will be cooler with a low near 50, followed by a cloudy cooler Thursday with a high near 70 and a fair Friday ahead of possible rain Saturday and a warming trend to the low 80s by Sunday. Yesterday’s high reached 78.
North Vietnam seeks to haul in supplies from Chinese vessels anchored offshore and move them inland by barges. Four Chinese ships have been identified at Hai Phong and near Vinh, with limited success as U.S. planes have sunk many barges and shore points. Overcast conditions reduced strikes to about 230 with two storage depots near Haiphong attacked, causing two large secondary explosions.
Washington AP reports consumer prices rose three tenths in May lifting the index to 124.7. Clothing and transportation led the gain while overall living costs climbed for the first time in three months. Wages for about 50 million workers averaged $133.21 weekly, outpacing inflation.
