Tokyo dispatch reports plans for Prime Minister Kishi to resign in May after victory in the treaty talks. Leftist opposition maintains blockade tactics while the government presses ahead with the accord.
Premier Nobusuke Kishi survives Communist protests and wins ratification of a new decade long security pact with the United States. After the vote, Kishi is expected to resign as leftists blockade his residence and thousands march in Tokyo. Police guarded the residence as demonstrators vow to continue the fight against the treaty and American bases. The Socialist and Communist parties condemn the pact, while the Democratic party calls it illegal.
The United States welcomed Japan's ratification of the Tokyo Washington security pact with relief. Officials expect rapid completion of ratification and hope to implement the pact within days. Premier Kishi's defiant stand against left wing demonstrators is noted, while concerns about Japanese public acceptance remain.
TAIPEI Formosa AP reports Chinese Communist guns renewed shelling on Quemoy near the mainland as President Eisenhower prepared to depart Formosa for South Korea and Japan, signaling a tense end to his Formosan visit.
Communist China shelled Quemoy Friday night with 86 000 shells. A military hospital and 83 civilian homes were destroyed or damaged. Eight killed and 47 wounded. four military and three civilian deaths reported. More than 100 buildings damaged including schools.
