Parole delay for Ray after Brushy Mountain escape

James Earl Ray serving a 99 year term for Martin Luther King Jr. s death will not be eligible for parole before 2001 due to an escape from Brushy Mountain State Prison. A prison board sentenced Ray and six inmates to 30 days in administrative segregation and cut three years of accumulated time.

Locust Grove dogs link killer to farm house mystery

Tracking dogs traced the killer of three Girl Scouts to a nearby farm house half a mile from the Camp Scott murder scene. Mayes County Atty Sid Wise said the intruder was the same person who sexually assaulted the girls ages 8 to 10. In Washington state, a first confirmed Legionnaire's Disease case is reported in Bellingham with a 61 year old custodian's death, linked to the Philadelphia convention outbreak but not indicating a statewide spread per health officials.

Mrs Truman admitted for tests after fall

Bess Truman widow of former President Harry S. Truman was admitted to Research Medical Center in Kansas City for observation and tests after a fall at her Independence home. The 92 year old was listed in satisfactory condition Friday night following the Thursday accident when she slipped in the downstairs area, a Secret Service spokesman confirmed.

Riots Inside South Africa Leave Several Blacks Dead

Six blacks in two segregated townships near the coast were killed by police gunfire as rioting spread, raising two day total dead to at least nine. About 33 people were wounded and property damage reached roughly 1.5 million dollars in Kwanabuhle and Kabah outside Uitenhage, 500 miles southwest of Johannesburg. A police sweep in Kwanobuhle resulted in 278 arrests.

Partly Cloudy Weather With Humidity Relief

Skies will be partly cloudy tonight and Sunday with a low in the lower 60s and a Sunday high in the lower 80s. Humidity eases after several hot days. Rain chances are 30 percent tonight and 10 percent Sunday, with a showery pattern possible Monday and Tuesday and fair skies Wednesday with highs near 80 and lows in the 50s.

Miners dispute ownership of the Old Woman meteorite

Three California miners claim the two ton iron rock named Old Woman found on Old Woman Mountain belongs to them after filing a San Bernardino claim last September. They seek about 1 million dollars in negotiations with the government as the Bureau of Land Management asserts public ownership under the Antiquities Act. The meteorite will be displayed in Riverside after removal from the desert site.

Middletown study urges more women in school administration

The Community Education Study presented to the Board of Education urges greater female input in management roles, noting only two of 36 principals and assistant principals are women. It calls for national recruitment, management training, talent inventories, mandatory administrative training, and regular evaluations to broaden qualified candidates and balance gender in leadership. It previews a look at staff reductions planned over two years.
