Nixon Drug Program Hailed On Capitol Hill

Washington AP reports President Nixon's plan to spend 135 million more on federal anti drug programs drew criticism as insufficient yet drew broad praise for urgency. Key figures like Rep Claude Pepper and Sen Harold Hughes urged greater funds and focus on rehabilitation and demand reduction over supply control. Nixon named Dr Jerome Jaffe to head a new drug abuse office and proposed a Vietnam testing and rehab program. He also sought 18.1 million to boost Customs drug interdiction and linked foreign aid to drug production cuts, prompting Republican and Democratic debate on policy direction.
