A ruptured Standard Oil pipeline flooded Venice Boulevard with high gusts of flame as construction crews pierced the line. Two people died and 26 were hospitalized. In nearby Van Nuys a chlorine fumes fire forced 5 000 evacuations and 63 hospitalizations.
Beiruti factions announce arrests of suspects in the killing of US Ambassador Francis E. Meloy Jr. and two aides. Officials in Washington cite possible links to Arab factions and outline ongoing investigations while mourning the ambassador’s death.
A second floor blaze at Shenandoah Homes in Roanoke killed four residents and injured 24. About 100 residents were evacuated as Roanoke hospitals treated patients for heart attacks, burns, or smoke inhalation. Red Cross sheltered roughly 82 residents. cause and damage remain under investigation.
In Soweto, Johannesburg, rioting by students continued into a second day with cars stoned and fires set. Three more people died, raising the overall toll to 26, with all but two of the victims residents of the township.
About 220 injured and 126 arrested as air force helicopters bombarded rioters and 1,000 police in armored cars patrolled the area. Soweto demonstrations over Afrikaans language policy and mandatory schooling led to gunfire, fires, and clashes across roughly 21 square miles with 21 buildings burned.
Filipina Narciso and Lenora Perez, registered nurses and resident aliens from the United States, face federal charges of murdering five patients and poisoning 10 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor. The indictment includes conspiracy to commit first degree murder and cites Pavulon as the drug involved. The FBI notes eleven deaths last year from breathing failure while investigators pursued the case amid questions of motive.
