In Chicago Loop offices the young ladies beat the heat by wading in Civic Center Plaza pool during lunch. In Bettendorf, Iowa temperatures neared 100 with 92 percent humidity as locals sought relief from the heat. Kenney Thompson stands by a water cooled garbage can.
Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin lands at Kennedy and tours Midtown Manhattan before heading to the United Nations for a special session on the Middle East. He travels in a 30 car motorcade amid heavy security as U.N. and city authorities prepare for continued high level talks.
United Nations General Assembly opens to address Israel’s withdrawal from captured Arab lands. Kosygin heads Soviet drive with hopes for peace talks. Johnson’s possible appearance unclear. No immediate Big Four summit, Paris talks not promising, U S and Canada push for lasting peace.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, warm and humid conditions tonight with a possible thundershower. Sunday will be cooler but still cloudy with another likely thundershower.
Associated Press photographer Henry Huet reported about 15 Americans killed and 40 to 50 wounded after a three hour battle. About 500 men faced a three sided assault as helicopters delivered heavy equipment and Viet Cong opened fire from all sides. Air power and artillery eventually repelled the attack. Hanoi radio warned of executions of American POWs if death sentences were carried out on three Viet Cong terrorists.
In Dayton Ohio a small corps of Negro youths was sworn in as the citys first youth patrol to head off trouble following arson looting and vandalism. Police patrols will arrest any group refusing to disperse. Cincinnati maintains a racial cease fire after four nights of unrest despite arson and vandalism.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr announces Operation Breadbasket will target bakeries first to gain jobs for Negroes in Cleveland. Negotiations were to begin Friday but had not started as King left for Chicago. The SCLC provides a five staff for the summer program via the United Pastors Association.
Police reported Friday night few rock throwing incidents and 17 arrests, with 344 arrests already made since violence began Monday. In Lansing winds cleared crowds. about 50 officers spent three hours dispersing a mob near the Capitol. Roy Wilkins urged NAACP leaders to meet grievances and actively prevent riots.
Washington sources say President Johnson has not abandoned plans for an income tax hike though size and timing remain undecided. Officials noted the six per cent surcharge proposal is not locked in and no legislation has been sent to Congress.
A Ford Foundation commissioned panel of six physicians reports widespread Negro hunger and vitamin deficiencies in the South, with Mississippi area cited as hardest hit. Dr. Raymond Wheeler quoted warning of a conspiracy against African Americans and noting difficulty believing such conditions exist in the United States. The researchers discussed with Agriculture officials and Senate poverty subcommittee members, detailing vitamin deficiencies and treatable diseases among children.
Senior Liberty crewmen testified in secret in Malta that the June assault by Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats was deliberate. They said ample time existed to identify the ship and cited the attack's accuracy as proof, as Liberty limped into Malta with 81 hits and a torn hull after a brief, intense strike.
