Australian hostage freed in Baghdad amid surge of violence
Australian Douglas Wood was rescued in Ghazaliya Baghdad after 47 days held by insurgents. He appeared wary but unharmed, thanking those involved in his release as Iraqi and American troops supported his exit to an American armored carrier. The day also saw a deadly attack on an army mess hall in Khalis, Diyala, killing 26 soldiers and wounding 26, as Al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility. A separate car bombing in eastern Baghdad killed 10, including eight police. The Iraqi tribunal released a second Saddam Hussein videotape while a parliamentary committee proposed concessions to Sunni Arabs on the constitution draft.
