The Tractors-for-Freedom Committee received a secret report from four technicians who negotiated with Fidel Castro on a men for machines exchange. No decision was reached on Castro's demand of 28 million dollars in farm tractors for 1 167 Cuban rebels.
The Senate approved a multi billion dollar highway financing bill with a 16 year billboard control bonus extension. It provides the federal government about 7 billion of the 41 billion cost and keeps 90 percent federal aid as the measure goes to the House.
Richard Naegele, 25, of Cincinnati, died from injuries suffered in an auto accident Monday. Six other occupants were hospitalized after the wreck on a local road north of Ohio 125.
Fidel Castro described the April 17 19 invasion as a failure of the rebels and a victory for his movement. He led reporters 300 miles through the invasion site, inspected beaches at Giron and Largo, and cited stronger anti aircraft defense and miscalculations by the attackers. He noted casualties and captives, and highlighted his economic program as evidence of strength.
Miss Belle Hetzel, 71, attended a University of Michigan 1911 class reunion in Ann Arbor after arriving by plane her first time back in years. The Omaha, Nebraska native is a retired high school teacher who has piloted airplanes for 31 years.
In Bannamone Laos the pro Western Laotian government delegation walked out of a truce conference over inspection rights. Gen Sing Rattanasamay said the walkout was due to Pathet Lao refusing ICC observers. He announced attendance at the next meeting, seeking access for the India Canada Poland three power commission.
The Pathet Lao and Prince Souvanna Phouma propose inspections only at Ban Hin Heap and Kieu Kha Cham on the north south highway north of Vientiane. The control commission is split on inspection sites while Indian Maj. Gen. Dayal Sing favors consensus. The Canadian delegation seeks access to any agreed inspection location.
Adlai E Stevenson flies to Peru after a night of clashes in La Paz in which four leftist demonstrators were killed and five wounded. Extra troops guarded his Lima visit as protests aimed to embarrass President Pas Estenssoro, while Stevenson quipped about being stuck in an elevator during the day.
A smoky blaze on a Hudson River pier caused about 250000 in damage at a New York Central Railroad pier at 70th Street. Nineteen rail cars and several gondolas burned or were moved away by engines as over 100 firefighters battled the flames for two hours with three fireboats and 80 apparatus on scene. No serious injuries were reported.
