Syrian forces advance toward Marjayoun after seizure of Rachaya
Syrian tank forces moved toward Marjayoun, six miles from Israel, after capturing Rachaya the gateway to guerrilla bases in southern Lebanon. A Palestinian spokesman warned that Marjayoun’s fall would give Syria control of the Arkoub region’s northern and western fringes. Rachaya, near Beirut, had been a key staging area for raids into Israel since 1971. Heavy fire drove guerrillas and Lebanese army renegades from Rachaya after a week of resistance.
