Heavenly Photos To Become Atlas
PASADENA California AP Photographs of the heavens visible from the Northern Hemisphere to 300 million light years will be made into a 2000 per copy atlas by Palomar Observatory. The atlas will be compiled by Caltech and the National Geographic Society for universities and observatories. It will be produced with the 48 inch Schmidt telescope in four years, not the 200 inch. Dr Ira S Bowen says the survey may record 500 million stars and 10 million complete stellar systems and could aid future theories on whether the universe is expanding and on atomic radiation sources. Dr Edwin P Hubble notes the Schmidt will open new fields of intensive study.
