The Dow fell to intraday lows before a rally, with the Dow at 574.04 and the S P 500 around its May 28 level. NYSE seat prices slipped to 115000, the lowest since 1959, reflecting renewed selling pressure.
SAN FRANCISCO AP The three convicts Anglin Clarence Anglin Morris may have had outside help in escaping Alcatraz Island prison. FBI probing visitors to the prison, authorities comb Angel Island, and a fourth nonfleeing convict Allen West of Atlanta is linked to the plot. The quartet used spoons to pry ventilator covers, climbed a pipe over a roof and fence, then reached the water.
A 20 year old Akron babysitter confessed to police that she strangled 14 month old Michael Magier with a silk stocking after losing her job due to her boyfriend's visits. She told police she choked the child for about 20 minutes and was held without bond in Summit County jail.

Washington reports the United States announced the detonation of another nuclear device at the Atomic Energy Commission underground test site in Nevada. The Wednesday night blast was the 37th under the underground series begun last Sept. 15 and was described as a low yield test with an explosive force under 20,000 tons of conventional explosives.

Edward M. Gilbert, a Wall Street figure who admitted unauthorized withdrawals of about $1.95 million from the E. L. Bruce Co., fled to Rio de Janeiro seeking extradition protection. He arrived with a 30 day Brazilian visa and planned a six week stay, while U S and Brazilian authorities investigate. Manhattan District Attorney Hogan is examining the withdrawals.

Bryan Russ said he will subpoena several more witnesses as the Robertson County grand jury weighs whether Marshall was murdered or committed suicide.
House investigators question Commercial Solvents president Maynard C. Wheeler on Estes deals and a reported four million dollar cache in Switzerland. Wheeler disputed testimony given to a Texas inquiry by Frank Cain as Estes faces fraud charges and a collapsed empire. Wheeler said Estes owes 5.7 million to Solvents, secured by grain storage payments and other collateral. Agriculture Dept ordered removal of government surplus grain from Estes facilities and payments have been impounded since his April indictment.
Early Tuesday night the BF L Bruce firm a leading manufacturer of hardwood flooring released a statement saying Gilbert voluntarily had disclosed the unauthorized withdrawals and that he had resigned. The company quoted Gilbert as saying his actions were directed to the protection of an acquisition program on behalf of the corporation and in my judgment were in the best interests of the corporation and its stockholders.
