Ex-guardsman defends claim he heard shot
Barry Morris of Kent testified in a $46 million Kent State shootings damages suit that a small nonmilitary weapon fired seconds before guardsmen turned and fired, sounding unlike a military rifle. He said the shot likely came from behind him, possibly muffled by trees, and resembled a .22 or .25 caliber weapon rather than the guardsmen’s .30 caliber M1 rifle.

In Columbus the House Finance Committee showed serious opposition to an equalization plan for state aid to public schools. Opponents include the Ohio Manufacturers Association and several major local districts. A substitute bill may drop key provisions while keeping the core equal yield concept.
