Castelo Gets Death Verdict For Slaying

MANILA judge Emilio Rilloraza sentenced former Justice and Defense Secretary Oscar Castelo to death for the second time over a political slaying three years ago. Castelo, a former cabinet member of the late President Elpidio Quirino, was found guilty of ordering the murder of Manuel P. Monroy, a star witness in a bribery and extortion case against him. Castelo’s retrial followed a prior death sentence on March 31, 1955 that was overturned after a witness retracted testimony. The new sentence automatically goes to the Supreme Court for review.
