New Madison Square Garden Center Raises Roof With Cable System
The new Madison Square Garden Sports and Entertainment Center in New York features a post-less drum shaped roof held by 48 exterior cables connected to an inner tension hub. Bethlehem Steel supplied the 3 1/2 inch diameter cable the largest in its history, with 659 pound sockets. The complex includes a 29 story office building, covers two city blocks, and rises over Pennsylvania Station. The arena floor sits 45 feet above street level and the roof stands 150 feet higher. Construction aims for late fall events with a grand first spectacle anticipated.
