Warren Johnson in St Joseph sought to extend his house to fit an 8 ft 4 in mountain lion rug made from a Utah catch. City commissioner offered tail cutting as a solution but Johnson refused. after negotiations the plan was dropped and the room was enlarged to fit the rug.
Thirteen East Germans hijacked the Friedrich Wolf, a 386-ton river excursion boat, with a baby aboard and fled toward West Berlin. Police fired over 200 bullets from multiple positions. no one was hurt. The escape group, eight men, five women, and a five month old, used the boat to reach West Berlin before returning to East Berlin.
Neutralist Prince Souvanna Phouma said the three princes summit conference adjourned until Monday to reflect on forming a coalition government. Souphanouvong and Gen. Phoumi Nosavan reported progress, but no ministers distribution was decided.
Soviet bloc leaders closed a two day economic strategy conference in Moscow amid concerns over lagging agriculture and the West European Common Market. A communique was not due until Saturday signaling likely decisions to deepen East bloc economic integration and a Soviet counter to the Common Market. Albania refused invitation and pledged non acceptance. Khrushchev had labeled the Market a monopolist threat and proposed an international trade conference to counter its influence.
Washington AP report says the 11,400 kilowatt reactor at Piqua Ohio can be run without endangering public health or safety. North American Aviation and the Atomic Energy Commission officials note the plant was built for the AEC and a Thursday hearing addressed provisional authorization to load fuel and operate for up to a year. Decisions on longer operation will follow in later hearings.
Robert F. Manuel, dismissed Republican counsel to a House committee probing Billie Sol Estes, charged the inquiry distorts the truth and suppresses details. He cited an Agriculture Department official claiming Estes pressured him using references to Sam Rayburn and Lyndon B. Johnson, though Johnson’s name wasn’t raised publicly. Manuel said exec session discussions implicated members of Congress and a senior official, and he provided an Agriculture Department report to New York Tribune reporter Karl Mazo. He was discharged after a day of closed-door wrangling. Democrats called it an ethics breach as hearings stalled. Secretary Freeman had earlier fired James Ralph for using Estes funds for personal calls. The subcommittee voted to dismiss Manuel by party line.
The Senate approved a 4.7 billion ceiling for next year’s foreign aid, close to President Kennedy’s request, but plans to cut the program before funds are finally allocated. The measure sets spending limits for fiscal 1963 starting July 1, with appropriations to follow in separate legislation.
In Moscow the Soviet Union warned Britain France and the United States it will not allow West Berlin to remain a base for revengist and militaristic circles. A note threatened the UMR that Moscow may take measures to fulfill its commitments to the East German Democratic Republic as an ally.

The Miami Valley is set for a damp weekend with three fourt hs to one inch of precipitation in showers Saturday through Monday. Temperatures will run cooler with highs near 79 and lows around 57 through Wednesday, and a 60 degree low under partly cloudy skies tonight. Saturday's high should be near 85, following yesterday's high around 84 and a 43 degree overnight low.
