The Labor Department reports the national unemployment rate climbed to 5.2 percent in May, driven by more teen job seekers. About 4.7 million Americans were unemployed, up 170000 from April, with total employment near 86 million.

American space officials say the Soviet Union lagged behind in manned space tech. The Soyuz craft is ground controlled and could not reach the moon, with cosmonauts playing minor roles. Joint Apollo Soyuz flight planned to start July 15, 1975 with three astronauts and two cosmonauts aboard.
Rescue workers comb debris from Gibson's discount store and a large supermarket after a Thursday tornado. Former Attorney General Richard G. Kleindienst was given a suspended one month jail term and a $100 fine after pleading guilty to refusing to answer fully about the ITT antitrust case before a Senate committee. He remains free but on one month probation.
In Inglewood California a man battered and stabbed two teenagers to death then shot Larry Calhoun outside a suburban home. Investigators said the 18 month old Shamonda survived amid her aunt's blood. Detectives pursue leads while naming Eric Dixon and Regina Lynch as victims.
U.S. District Judge John H. Pratt ruled the FDA acted illegally by restricting methadone distribution to clinics and hospitals after approval. He said the agency lacks power to limit pharmacy distribution once approved, noting the 1972 regulations aimed to curb illicit use do not authorize such limits. The case was brought by the American Pharmaceutical Association.
Overnight thundershowers are forecast in the Middletown area with lows in the upper 60s. Saturday brings partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid 80s. yesterday's high was 82 and overnight 65. The extended outlook shows fair skies and highs in the 80s from Sunday through Tuesday.
