Governors Plan for Regional Industry Talks Proposed by Rhodes and Brown
Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes praised a proposal for periodic informal sessions among leading industrial states to address mutual problems with White House involvement. California Governor Edmund G. Brown endorsed the idea after discussions with Rhodes and Ohio Finance Director Richard Krabach. Brown warned against industrial raids and said such huddles could outperform traditional conference committees. Rhodes urged central U.S. locations and said it is time to stop moving industry away from states and focus on drawing it inward. He noted Ohio has sent teams of industrial development specialists to other states to attract companies, a practice he called Rhodes Raiders, though he said repeated bidding by states has hindered Ohio’s gains. He referenced the Appalachian poverty program Ohio joined reluctantly, but did not name the states involved.
