At Camp Had a report from Maebashi District Court. GI William Girard, 21, declared Japanese charges that he enticed a woman scrap collector to her death were untrue. He expects a fair trial in Japanese courts as lawyers plan to defend him despite U.S. legal moves to halt the trial.
The presiding judge expects William S. Girard's trial in Japan to last one to three months at most. Since the 1953 Status of Forces Agreement, 435 American servicemen have faced trials in Japan for off duty offenses.
A federal judge in Washington blocked surrender of Sgt. Girard to Japan pending a Tuesday habeas corpus hearing. Girard faces trial under U S Japanese status of forces rules for a shooting on a U S military base while on duty. The case tests whether Japanese courts may try servicemen for offenses on base.
Four men bound Mrs. J. W. Offutt in her Elmwood City home and looted 30 000 dollars in furs jewelry and cash. They seized three diamond rings a diamond studded watch and band valued at 25000 and a mink cape plus a store value of 2500 each. They damaged the telephone and later called a neighbor to check on her.
Scattered thundershowers are Middletonians' only relief from the summer heat. The mercury rose to 92 degrees by 4 p.m. yesterday and cooled to a comfortable night. By 9 a.m. today it stood at 75, with yesterday's low 64 and this morning's about 68.

Leaders cite expected votes and shifting Republican sentiment to back mandatory jury trials for violations of federal court orders in rights cases.
A Moscow radio spokesman said it has solicited statements from prominent Americans urging a ban on nuclear bomb tests and will reveal names only as statements are broadcast. He noted many remain unanswered and that some of 2000 American scientists who called for ending tests have been contacted. The Soviet government advocates stopping all atomic weapons tests by Russia the United States and Britain.
Washington announced a 48.9 million dollar aid pact with Poland and offered 46.1 million more if Congress authorizes funds. The accord ends 312 months of talks sparked by Eisenhower's pledge to aid Poland or any Red nation seeking sovereignty from Soviet control.
In Karachi the Baghdad Pact nations and the United States move to form a permanent planning body as part of the anti-Communist alliance. The U S will join the pact's Military Committee and may station officers in Baghdad to work with U S personnel, signaling possible future joint command along NATO lines. Britain Turkey Iran Iraq and Pakistan are full members.
In Annapolis Md the Naval Academy sent 837 new officers into the armed forces during the 117th graduation exercises. A crowd of more than 11 000 attended the hat tossing in the academy field house surpassing prior commencements.
President Eisenhower wins fresh GOP backing for his 71.8 billion dollar spending program as delegates at the national conference debate the budget. Vice President Nixon defends non-Democratic control of the White House while Meade Alcorn urges a 20th century GOP appeal and Eliz abeth Heffelfinger notes broad voter support for defense and platform pledges.
New York Times journalist Clifton Daniel announced his first child would be named Clifton Truman Daniel after grandfathers Harry S. Truman and E. Clifton Daniel. The baby, born early Wednesday at Doctors Hospital, prompted the former president and wife Bess to visit. The couple chose the name with Mrs Truman in agreement, while Truman preferred not to have the child named entirely after him.
Washington Gen Lauris Norstad told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that NATO forces are three to four times stronger and capable of destroying targets as needed. He praised the Eisenhower era buildup and supported the $3.865 billion foreign aid plan. The committee approved a $2 billion revolving fund for long term loans and extended military assistance for free world allies for two more years.
