Barn Fire Destroys 50 Year Old Farm Structure In Monroe

A Monroe farm suffered its third major barn fire since 1952 when a 50 year old barn on U. S. 25 burned, estimated loss 16185 including 15 tons hay 10 tons straw 125 chickens a goat and hogs and tools. Lightning struck the barn during a brief afternoon storm as Monroe Fire Chief Barishue and the department battled to save adjoining buildings and the farm well ran dry.

Mother Shoots Self After Killing Children in Ohio

In Dayton Ohio a mother of two Mary Blakesly 29 killed her children Michael 7 and Debora 9 months then shot herself in the attic. Det Sgt Teeters said a note left by Mrs Blakesly stated she did not want her children to face insanity and mentioned money and health without a sound mind. Robert Blakesly 34 found the bodies on returning home from work.

House Approves 8 Percent Postal Pay Raise 407 to 1

The House passed an average eight percent pay boost for about 500,000 postal workers by a 407 to 1 vote with Rep. Cole the sole dissenter. The $165 million annual cost retroactive to March 1 would raise base pay, with larger increases for supervisors and a minimum of six percent. The bill returns to the Senate for minor amendments and then to President Eisenhower for signature as he previously vetoed a larger raise.

The region experiences showers and scattered thunderstorms with a high near 78 today. Tonight turns cloudy and less humid with a low around 55. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy and mild with a high of 75. Yesterday's high was 89 and the low 66. Rainfall Monday totaled .23 inches.
