Enforced Transfusion Upheld by New Jersey Court
New Jersey Supreme Court in a 7-0 decision upheld state authority to order life saving blood transfusions for a child of Jehovah's Witnesses. The ruling found such a court-ordered transfusion not a violation of religious liberty, in the Perricone case from Elizabeth, where the infant John died after treatment. Justice Schettino stated societal interests can prevail over individual freedoms when necessary.
