Middletown Not Dirty City Survey Shows Improvements

Middletown still has soot and fly ash but cleanliness has greatly improved over four years. A survey by the Coal Producers Committee for Smoke Abatement found Middletown not a dirty city compared with similar industrial communities. H. B. Lammers, chairman, reported the findings at a Middletown Smoke Abatement Committee meeting. The survey covered schools, churches, dairies, laundries, hotels, theaters, offices, and other plants. Compared with 1948, heating plants and furnaces reduced defective and obsolete units, and improperly operated plants declined. The national average for defective heating plants was lower, and Middletown’s progress was praised as substantial. The committee will refer the report to the Industrial Council and continue identifying causes and cures for soot and fly ash. Roy Patterson presided at the meeting at the Chamber of Commerce.
