Pain Remains For Five Kennedy Wounding Survivors
Five people wounded in the Kennedy assassination anniversary year report persistent pain and numbness. Elizabeth Evans recalls a sharp sting while brushing hair. Ira Goldstein and Irwin Stoll describe recurring leg numbness. William Weisel bears a long abdominal scar and supports capital punishment for Sirhan Sirhan. Paul Schrade was hospitalized longest. Violence report calls Americans bloody minded, says violence endures
A National Commission task force released a 300000 word study on violence on Kennedy’s anniversary. Historians Graham and Gurr say Americans are historically violent, with the 1960s the era of greatest turmoil and ongoing civil strife tied to racial tensions and university protests. They note selective memory and unresolved grievances fueling clashes, while crime rates vary by context. The US ranks high among Western democracies in strife but remains a relatively stable republic overall.
