Hamilton Teen Drowns After River Swim Near Dam
Two Hamilton youths, 14 year old Tom Steele and 13 year old Neil Blanton, went swimming after school near the Great Miami River. Steele disappeared midafternoon and was recovered about 6:30 p.m. Blanton, who had warned by his mother not to swim, helped until a boat operator pulled him from the water. Steele's body was found in ten feet of water, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Butler County coroner. The incident occurred near the Black Street dam as fire crews, emergency responders, and sheriff's officers searched the area.

Bike Rider Hit Injuries Slight
An eight year old boy riding a bicycle escaped serious injury yesterday when struck by a car on Woodlawn Avenue. The youth was the only injury in six accidents investigated by police that resulted in three motorists being cited and damage estimated at 1600 dollars. Tommy Rutledge, son of Mr and Mrs. Thomas Rutledge, 1922 Woodlawn Ave, suffered minor leg injuries and was treated at Middletown Hospital. He was injured shortly before 11 a.m. when a truck driven by Charlies M. Henry, 23, of 4148 Oxford State Road, pulled from a driveway and hit Rutledge who was riding his bike on the sidewalk. Police said a hedge at the alley created a blind spot and may have kept Henry from seeing the youth.

Zone Change Approved For City Ambulance Plan
City may avoid operating its own ambulances if two local funeral directors agree to provide the service on a rotating basis with subsidies of 12 dollars per day call and 17 dollars per night call for in city cases. The plan aims to reduce uncollectable bills seen at 50 percent for Leffler’s operation, potentially costing about 10 thousand dollars yearly but avoiding major new staff hires. Commissioners unanimously supported a one year subsidy trial, while some officials expect eventual city ambulance provision.
