Missile Blown But Not Warhead
Scientists at Johnston Island destroyed a Thor missile and its nuclear warhead at high altitude, proving a warhead can be blown apart without a nuclear explosion. Fragments fell into the Pacific Ocean, and officials said there is no hazard to humans or ocean water though some fragments may remain aloft. The test was halted 10 seconds before detonation and rescheduling announced, with future shots dependent on resolving a tracking malfunction.
