Retired General Diaz Slain in Dominican Republic Shootout

In Ciudad Trujillo soldiers and police killed retired Gen. Juan Tomas Diaz the accused chief assassin of dictator Rafael Trujillo during a night gun battle. An alleged accomplice, Antonio de la Maza, died later in a military hospital. Both had fled a house-to-house sweep after a tip led 100 security forces to Independence Park and Bolivar Avenue.
