Formica fights FTC bid to cancel its trademark

The Formica Corp of Cincinnati accuses the Federal Trade Commission of aggressive action to overturn its 1922 trademark on plastic laminate products. FTC petitions the Trademark Board arguing Formica has become descriptive of laminates and wall coverings. Formica, a subsidiary of American Cyanimid, says the Lanham Act is not retroactive and lacks jurisdiction to challenge its long established mark.
