McNamara orders halt to military drinking rituals

Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara directs an immediate halt to initiation and similar ceremonies in all services. He demands reports by June 15 on potentially hazardous practices, following the death of Lt. Ronald Greer Reeves after a Ft. Bragg prop blast. Reeves, a Clemson graduate and nondrinker, died from suffocation after consuming alcohol. an autopsy found the vodka amount at about 17 ounces. The coroner's jury labeled the death accidental.
