Food Boost Proposed To Raise Poor Diet Aid
A Budget Bureau task force estimates it would cost 2.9 billion dollars more than current spending to ensure adequate food for the poor. The figure surpasses Nixon's proposal of 270 million for the next year and 1 billion in the following year. The draft notes some 208 million Americans live below the poverty line and outlines potential program changes including installment payments for food stamps, emergency loans, broader eligibility, interim commodity distribution, and federal funds to extend programs. If poverty reduction continues at recent pace, elimination by 1983 is deemed overly optimistic.
