Consumer prices rise 0.9 percent in June as inflation bites
The Labor Department reports June consumer prices up 0.9 percent for a third straight month, led by food, housing, and autos. Average worker purchasing power fell 0.4 percent while wages rose 0.5 percent, roughly half the rise in prices. Beef, dairy, cereal, bread, and oils driven higher. vegetables and some others drifted lower. Home costs up 1.2 percent with electricity up 2.6 percent. postal rates up 14 percent. New car prices up 0.9 percent. some transport fares fell. Overall CPI 7.4 percent higher than June 1977. Strauss warns June may be another bad month.
